Open-ended practice of key phrases needed to book a room in a hotel and days of the week.

6 column grid.

1 Give everyone a blank grid. Ask them to imagine they’re booking a room in a Spanish hotel for one night (with or without family/friends) and to tick boxes in the grid showing the accommodation they need – type of room, bath or shower, and which day they want it for.

2 Learners, working in pairs, create a hotel reception role play, taking turns to be the receptionist. They play the roles suggested by their grid, i.e. the ‘visitor’ assumes s/he has booked whatever is on his/her grid whereas the ‘receptionist’ assumes that the information on his/her own grid (the registration book) is the correct booking.

3 The ‘visitor’ starts with a greeting and Tengo una habitación reservada. and the conversation continues with single questions and answers along the following lines. Encourage learners to use ¿verdad?

A Buenas tardes señor/a. Tengo una habitación reservada.
B Buenas tardes. ¿Su nombre?
A gives name
B Sí, señor/a (name). Una habitación individual ¿verdad?
A agrees or disagrees according to own grid
B ¿Con baño?
A agrees or disagrees
B ¿Para miércoles?

4 Learners then change roles. It's a good idea to try this at least one more time with different partners.

Practice in expressing and understanding dates. Using the Spanish alphabet in response to ¿Cómo se escribe? Revision of exchanging names.

Blank Spanish calendars + copy for OHP.
Individual name cards.

For each of your learners, write out a card with a Spanish name on it (use names from unit 1 or names of famous people) and a date written in figures. You need a variety of dates spread through the year, e.g. 23/1 or 13 – 16/5. Keep a list of all the names and dates.

1 The aim is for everyone to enter under the correct month on their calendar the names of all the others together with the precise dates on which they want to book rooms. They will need to ask people’s names and how to spell them.

2 Give everyone a calendar and a name card and ask them to circulate telling each other the date/s they need a room as if they were making a phone call and to give and spell their names when asked. The conversation starts with Quisiera reservar una habitación. and continues with questions and answers along the following lines:

B ¿Para cuándo?
A Desde el 20 al 22 junio.
B Vale, de acuerdo. ¿Su nombre?

Remind them to say thank you, to ask for repetition, etc. in Spanish.

3 At the end of the activity, you can consolidate by putting a blank calendar on the OHP and asking questions to fill it in, e.g. ¿Hay una reservación en abril? ¿A nombre de quién? ¿Cómo se escribe? Check it against your list for accuracy.

The completed calendars can be used for portfolio evidence.

Consolidating the language needed to organise accommodation. Gaining confidence in manipulating language and forming complex sentences.

1 In groups of four or five, one person starts by saying quisiera reservar una/dos habitación/es then the others in the group in turn repeat this and add information to it.

2 The last person then starts another round which has to be different in all details. There is a surprising number of combinations which can be made from the language taught in the unit.

3 To consolidate, you could ask everyone to write out a complete sentence with details of a real or fantasy booking.
